Service learning builds community and interdisciplinary relationships. The Corporation for National and Community Service reports that students who volunteer “benefit from improved academic grades, increased attendance in school and the development of personal and social responsibility”. Through service learning, students also gain the opportunity to see themselves as a “contributor” instead of a “consumer”, learn that the content of the classroom is relevant to the real world, participate actively in learning, and gain the perspective to see beyond themselves.
